Abstract or Project Summary
In cooperation with Center for Heritage Conservation at Texas A&M University, this project will record and fully document one dozen buildings associated with the enslaved at two NATC sites prior to the Civil War, providing insight into their experiences and lifeways. Through its enabling legislation, Natchez National Historical Park (NATC) is charged with interpreting the world of chattel slavery. In order to fulfill its mission, NATC and its partners are undertaking a historic building survey of the slave dwellings and other outbuildings at two NATC sites, Melrose and the William Johnson House. This project will advance NATC’s mission and public interpretation of its historic sites.
